SEGMENT ONE

Presenter: Nick Baxter 

Topic: Tools of the Trade Part 1

Description: In this never before seen 2-part seminar, Nick will unpack the core concepts of his 'Holistic Approach' to tattooing in precise and categorical detail, constructing a thorough taxonomy of artistic factors, situational variables, and mark-making techniques involved in the tattoo process. He will then show examples of how tattooers can use this deconstructed set of tools as building blocks for more conscious, effective, and efficient artistic problem solving. The second part of Nick's presentation uses this toolkit to guide students through increasing levels of complexity, demonstrating various strategies for completing large-scale tattoo projects and solving some typical problems that occur during that process. Students will be given an open-ended homework assignment to devise an effective tattoo strategy based on a randomly chosen set of hypothetical variables, and submissions will be selected for review and discussion as time allows, during a third seminar session.

 

Learning Objectives:

- Gain a thorough understanding of all of the factors involved in the typical tattoo process

- Plan by reverse engineering the creative vision
